What you are actually paying for

There are seven layers under this carpet. You only ever see one.

This is a house in Brighton we finished this summer. The parquet was lifting because moisture was coming up through the subfloor. Laying a carpet over that would have looked perfect on day one, and been damp and smelly within a year. So this is what went down instead.

  1. CarpetCormar Primo Grande. The only layer the customer ever sees.
  2. UnderlayWilsons GrandeWaltz 9mm, PU and memory foam, lifetime guarantee.
  3. GripperFresh, right round the perimeter. Never reused.
  4. Levelling compoundKelmore LevelMore Flex and Fibre, back up to the height of the rest of the house.
  5. Grip primerKelmore PrimeMore Grip, so the next layer bonds instead of sitting on top.
  6. Damp proof membraneKelmore One Coat DPM Fast, a two part epoxy. The moisture stops here.
  7. Smoothing compoundKelmore LevelMore Pro, floated across the whole floor to get it flat.
  8. Bare subfloorEvery bit of old parquet lifted out first.

Trusted by the Brighton Centre

A venue like that does not have you back unless you got it right first time

For two years we have been the flooring team at the Brighton Centre. Carpet tiles through the corridors, acoustic panelling in the auditorium, commercial vinyl through the toilets, nosings on every staircase, and their logo set into the floor at the VIP entrance.

I used five teams before this. To them it is more than just laying a floor, it is actually completing a project.

In their words

Customers who nearly went with a cheaper quote

“From that first Saturday he spent a lot of time looking, checking and lifting a bit of carpet to see what the subfloor was. Other companies were here for 30 minutes, if that.”

“The attitude, the skills, the prices. You do what you say you are going to do.”

“From the moment I said I wanted it, you booked me in really quickly. It looks fantastic. It is exactly what I wanted.”

“They moved all the items for us, kept the areas clean at the end of the day, and were just very easy to have in the house.”

Before you let anyone near your house

Five questions to ask any flooring company

Ask us all five. We want to be the last flooring company you ever need to ring, and that only works if we do it right the first time.

  1. What are you doing to my subfloor?

If the answer is nothing, get another quote.

  2. Which underlay, and what thickness?

A vague answer usually means cheap underlay.

  3. Why this carpet for my house?

If they cannot tell you why, they are guessing with your money.

  4. Who is actually laying it?

A lot of firms sell the job and sub out the fitting to whoever is free.

  5. Can I see your showroom, or a finished job?

Anyone confident in their work will say yes straight away.

Stand on it before you buy it

A photo on a screen tells you nothing about how a carpet feels or wears. Come in, push your hand into it, see it next to the other options, and talk to the people who will actually fit it.

Let us look at the floor before anyone quotes it

The site survey is free. Steve comes out, lifts a corner if he needs to, and tells you what is actually going on underneath. Then you get a quote with every line in it.
